Keiki - Adopted!

Introducing Keiki - ADOPTED!!

Appropriately named, Keiki is Hawaiian for child or "The Little One". Our new little one is a petite package but she comes with a very big heart and many classic Akita traits. Keiki is still a youngster herself, as we estimate her to be between 1 1/2 - 2 years old.

She's quite the feminine little lady at a compact 72 lbs. Her white tipped curled tail drapes elegantly over her back and her gorgeous brindle markings seem to move in perfect unison with every stride she takes. Her sweet face is accentuated by her small brown eyes, which are deeply soulful. She moves silently, effortlessly and with the grace and ease, reminiscent of a black panther.

Keiki gives new meaning to the term "Speed Dating"! She's a proper lady at first meeting, holding back just a little so as not to give herself away completely until she gets to know you, all the while being friendly, social, gentle and easy going. However, once past the first date, she shamelessly plants little kisses on your cheek, leans into you for affection and her eyes light up when she sees you enter the room!

Extremely attuned to her guardian, she communicates with you with her expressive eyes, in a language all her own.

Found wandering the streets alone, it's no wonder she yearns for her special someone to love and bond with. Keiki will forge a bond with her person, rapidly and deeply, as it seems it is her mission in life to give all her heart and soul to you. We adore our little one, but don't want her to be in foster care long, as we want her to bond with her new adoptive person as soon as possible.

She would much rather be with you than be left alone for long periods, so someone who works from home or is home a lot is the ideal candidate. She just wants to be with you, doing whatever it is you want to do, and if she can't, she cries. She will probably need some time to adjust to being left alone in the beginning, as she transitions into her new home and routine.

She's surprisingly calm in the house for a youngster and appears to be housetrained. Someone taught her to sit, and she's eager to show you just how smart she is, especially if you have a treat! She's a fit, active girl who will make a great hiking partner whether you're trekking to the neighborhood coffee shop, or to the nearest mountain peak.

She loves to ride in the car but you won't find her sliming the windows, and you certainly will never witness any undignified displays of sticking her head out the window with lips and ears flapping in the wind! Not this girl! She'll lie in the back seat with a smile on her face and relax comfortably until you reach your next destination. Her gentle and affectionate ways will melt your heart.

She came into the shelter with a few small scabs around her face, ears and cheek, which appear to be possible bite marks. This may explain why she is sometimes reactive and wary of some, but not all dogs.  However, she walks regularly (and happily!) with two other Akitas (a male and female), and is very appropriate and comfortable with them.  She probably could live with an easy going male companion.

We hope we can find Keiki's forever home very soon. Our little one seems to pine for her very own person to love, and the longer she stays with us the longer her heart goes unfulfilled.

If you think you are that special person and feel you can provide the right home for her, please email us a completed application, which is located on our site at www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting.cfm

Kinako

Meet Kinako!

Kinako had been frequenting a neighborhood in Marin County, scavenging for food. We don't know how long she'd been on her own, but by the looks of it she wouldn't have survived long. She was emaciated with her ribs and backbone protruding, and even the muscles in her head around her face and skull were sunken in.

Over the course of several days a caring, compassionate woman who gained her trust with some warm home cooked meals, was able to coax her close enough to pet her, finally put a collar on her and get a better look at her. It was apparent Kinako had lost her right eye some time in her past.

Kinako's savior contacted the local animal welfare organization. There she would have a warm bed, regular meals and human interaction. It would also give her family a chance to come looking for her, if she was lost. Unfortunately, no one ever came for her.

We decided to take Kinako into our foster program. She needed some TLC and many nutritious meals to get back on her feet. She is just beginning to gain a few pounds, and though it will take some time, she is filling out nicely and enjoying not having to scavenge for a small morsel.

As is typical with our noble breed, she's put her past experience on the street, behind her. She holds no grudges towards anyone and has proven to be trusting, loving, affectionate and playful with all she meets. Her loss of vision in her missing eye doesn't impede her one bit. The eyelid has been sewn shut and it gives the impression that she's winking at you, like she's sharing a special secret with only you!

We'll have her remaining eye examined by a specialist to see if she has any issues with vision, either presently or in the future. From what we've observed, she doesn't appear to have any difficulty seeing with her left eye.

In a crowd, Kinako is completely in her element! She is quite the social butterfly, flirting with all those whom she thinks she can charm. We dare you to resist this beauty, as her playful demeanor is quickly contagious. She has not one iota of shame when it comes to asking for attention and belly rubs! She has quite the magnetic personality that attracts admirers from afar.

She's very food motivated and seems to be an empty well when it comes to treats! This will make training an easy task!!

She knows how to sit, down, and is learning all her other basics. She does have a habit of taking your hand or wrist gently in her mouth. She never bears down, just thinks it's how to express her excitement! She's being taught how not to share her enthusiasm in this manner! Because of this it's best she not share her home with young children.

Kinako is a girl on the move. She's active, playful and energetic. If you provide a solid foundation of leadership, quality exercise and mental stimulation, you will be rewarded with a well balanced companion. She would be a great addition to a home with someone with previous Akita experience and knows what it takes to guide and lead them with a firm yet gentle hand.

Kinako is 4 years old. She's in her prime and has her whole life ahead of her. She's particular about other dogs, so gradual introductions may be needed if you have a resident dog. From what we can tell, she's most likely not a good candidate with small dogs or cats.

Her ideal person is someone that can provide some basic boundaries for her so she knows what is expected of her. Currently, Kinako thinks the world is her oyster! A firm, Akita savvy guardian is what she will need to continue shaping her into a well rounded Akita.

If you are interested in Kinako, please email us your completed application to: info@tikihutakitarescue.com

Charlotte

A shelter in Southern California has asked us to assist them in finding Charlotte a new home. Prior to any consideration for adoption, a completed and approved application will be required.

The adoption application can be found at:
www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting.cfm

Here's what the shelter coordinator that has been working with Charlotte has to say about her:

"Charlotte is a beautiful, 2-year old Akita sweetheart that is looking for her Forever Home! She entered our shelter after being found running at-large with another dog in early July.

She is a very friendly, relaxed, social dog. When she sees a familiar person, she energetically greets them, but calms quickly.

She is healthy, mentally sensitive, responds well to verbal commands and corrections and needs an Akita-experienced, family with no young children or other pets (including cats) due to resource guarding over her food bowl and high-value items."

For more information about Charlotte or if you are able to give her a new home, please send your application/email to: info@tikihutakitarescue.com. Thanks!

Kia

If you're looking for that perfect match, a dog to be the love of your life that will only have eyes for you... then meet Kia!

Kia is a 5-year old Akita that was surrendered to our shelter in May 2010 because her owner could no longer care for her. She has been an indoor dog with outdoor privileges and she is house trained.

Kia is a very mild-mannered girl that is never destructive when left alone and just wants to do right by her people. Akitas are loyal to the end and never want to leave your side. Kia is no different, but she really has to get to know you first. She's friendly with all strangers and even greets new people with an excited hop and sweeping tail wag. As friendly as she is with strangers, all she really wants is a strong bond with someone that will last a lifetime.

Kia has lived with children and does very well with them. She's gentle, easy going and sweet. She also does very well with other dogs and would love to have some playmates, but living full-time with other dogs isn't going to work for her. She doesn't always like to share her food with canine friends, so she should be an only dog; although as stated before, she would LOVE to have some playmates. Kia didn't live with cats and shows some interest in chasing them. She could probably live with savvy cats that won't run, because when our savvy shelter cat swatted at her, she wanted nothing to do with him! Kia is definitely best friend material with a great personality and always kind words for strangers.

Kia is healthy, but has been diagnosed with a thyroid imbalance; a common issue with large breed dogs like Akitas and it's easily treated with an inexpensive, small pill daily. Our onsite veterinarian would be happy to talk with potential homes about her condition. Kia is already spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. Her Animal ID is 10543293 and the adoption fee is $75.

Niko - Adopted!

Niko is a 15-month old, spayed, female Akita that weighs about 70 pounds. She is housetrained and has had some obedience training, loves stuffed animals and going on hikes and walks. She is healthy and up to date on her vaccinations.

Niko has done well with other dogs that she has met. She is curious about cats and has lived with an indoor/outdoor cat for the past 6 months.

Yuba City Girl

"I work at Sutter County Animal Control and I picked up an older female Akita that had been dumped out in the country on June 10, 2010. She is wonderful!

She is blind, but I think she can see a little bit. Her pupils are dilated. She was no problem to approach and handle. I have not heard her bark since she has been here. Her ID# is A081864."

Pan

Pan is not in the TikiHut foster program, however we will be assisting in the adoption process. Please contact us with any questions about Pan.

Pan is a gorgeous, well mannered Akita who is seeking a new home because though he seemed as if he might get along with cats in the shelter environment, it's obvious in his adoptive home that he is far too interested in the resident kitties. We are looking for a home without cats.

Pan was picked up as a stray, and as a result will need to put some weight on. He will be a large boy once he's filled out and reached his adult weight. He could easily be 100+ lbs at maturity.

Here's what Pan's current family says about him:

"
Pan is a neutered male Akita who is approximately 18 months old and 85 pounds. He is healthy, up-to-date on all shots, and microchipped. He has a very sweet disposition, is affectionate, beautiful, devoted, and extremely intelligent. He is very social and loves people and other dogs. He is completely housetrained and has some basic obedience manners like sit, stay and lie down. He also walks well on leash.

Pan has an easygoing temperament, and can be fine hanging out by himself in the yard for several hours, but not all day. He is not crate-trained, but sleeps through the night on his own bed.

He is a very curious boy who observes everything that is going on around him. He has a playful, sometimes mischievous personality. He will steal the hat off your head while you are gardening, and run with it to the furthest corner of the yard. You can tell by his big grin he thinks this is very funny! Tug is one of his favorite games. He needs someone who appreciates his silly sense of humor but is firm enough to keep these puppyish games from getting out of control and let him know what is and isn't appropriate.

Pan is a fit, active dog. His favorite activities are hiking or jogging with his people. He loves to be out and about. He will hop eagerly in the car to go for a jaunt or to accompany you on errands. Since he is so handsome, he gets a lot of attention from strangers and people on the street, but he is very patient and always happy to make a new friend, be it adult or kid. The perfect home for Pan might be with active people who will take him hiking in the forest or running every day, and who will respect and nurture his amazing personality and make him part of the family. Since he can be mouthy in play we do not recommend a home with small children. Pan will thrive with continued training, since he is very smart.

He must live in a home with no cats! He also gets excitable around horses, cows, and goats, so we do not recommend a home with livestock. Pan should not go to off-leash dog parks or anywhere there is the potential for a canine altercation. While he does not pick fights, he will fight back if provoked by a sparky male dog. He would enjoy living with a lively female dog, but if he's an only dog, he should have some approved doggie friends for one-on-one play sessions.

We love Pan very much, and we are only giving him up because he cannot live safely with our three cats. We will keep Pan as long as it takes to find him the perfect forever home. Could you be that home?

"

If you are interested in Pan, please email a completed adoption application to Diane at: adopt 1 @ sbcglobal . net

Adoption application and home visit are required. You can obtain our application from our website at: www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting.cfm

Pan's current guardians will require a $100.00 adoption fee.

Nikita

Nikita is a special girl - she's deaf! She has had no training, and definitely needs direction. She will need to learn hand signals! Experience with deaf dogs or large breed dogs, is advised. She is uncomfortable around other dogs, so we're looking for her to be the only dog in her home. We highly recommend working with a trainer for this girl; she'll also needs lots of exercise. All of this is a challenge for a deaf dog; it is imperative that she be kept safe. Nikita also plays rough and is mouthy when she plays, so we recommend older kids for her. She is ten months old.

For more information about Nikita, please send an email to: info@tikihutakitarescue.com

Moose

Moose is a wonderful, 2-year old, Akita/Lab Mix that needs a new home. He's already vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. He was originally found running down a street with a 6-foot chain attached to his neck.

He is house-trained and loves children! He is a very sweet boy that needs regular exercise and some training. He likes other dogs, but we think he would prefer to be the only one getting attention. He is unknown with cats as he hasn't been tested with any. He is a higher energy dog, but we would not say he is hyper, just playful. We recommend that Moose's new family walk with him daily and attend basic obedience training classes.

Kuma

Kuma is a 2 year old female. She is friendly, happy, loyal, strong and beautiful! She seeks to please and wants to be with family as much as possible. She is the perfect dog for a family or individual who wants just one dog and wants her to be a true member of the family. She would not do well left alone all day and most doggie day camps will not take Akitas. She loves car rides and does best if she is hanging out with me all day as I drive around and do errands. She is goofy.

If we didn't know she was a dog, we would call her a cat. She hunts birds and bunnies and climbs small trees to get at birds using bird feeders. We live on a farm and she is so dominant she even thinks she can take on the horses and this has become an unsafe situation for her.

It will break our families heart to give her away but it is necessary for her safety. If Kuma does not work out for her new home we would take her back to make sure she is always in a good home. Our last Akita lived 16 years. They are wonderful dogs given the right environment for the Akita's nature. Our first Akita was not as dominant as Kuma. Kuma is more typical of the breed but will mellow with age.

Kuma will be your absolute best friend and loyal to you and your family, but she is dominant and strong. She needs a dominant owner who has experience handling and training strong dogs. Kuma has been trained with kind firm, consistent (no hitting) commands. She could use more training; however , she is a very smart dog and if you keep her with you she will learn quickly what is expected of her and she wants to please.

Zora - Urgent!

Hi, my name's Zora! Please adopt me!

This sweet, smiley, happy-go-lucky, older lady was recently pulled from the over-crowded Del Norte County shelter and is currently being fostered in Eureka. She is black and fluffy with some brown highlights around her shoulders, and looks like a miniature bear.

Zora is a medium-sized, 60-pound, spayed, Akita/Chow Mix with a good energy level. She likes to get up and go, but is also content to hang out around the house with her people. She is friendly and people-oriented, has an enthusiastic zest for life, and wags her tail constantly. She is also crate trained and up-to-date on her shots. She is not good with cats, and she needs to have her teeth cleaned. She is good with other dogs, depending on their personality. She was picked up as a stray so not much is known about her past, but she is probably 7 to 9 years old.

For more information or to meet Zora, please call Matt at 707-444-0446.

There is a small adoption fee to go to help cover her expenses.

URGENT! - I am not able to foster her for more than a few weeks.

Yuukan

UPDATE: 5/26/10:
Yuukan's situation was very urgent, and unfortunately due to health related challenges in his human family, they could no longer keep him. He was taken to the shelter in hopes that someone would adopt him. Thankfully a concerned and compassionate family member who knows him, learned of his situation and went straight to the shelter to get him out.

Yuukan is being temporarily cared for in Rocklin, CA, however cannot remain there, so we are still looking for Yuukan's forever home. His new guardian says he is a mellow boy, very people oriented and just loves to lounge around after a short walk about the neighborhood! Also it appears as though his chronic sneezing has subsided since being in his new environment. It's suspected that pollens in his former home were possibly causing some allergic reaction. He seems to be doing great now, much to his relief!

Here's what his current guardian says about Yuukan since he's been with her:
"When you speak to Yuukan, he moves his head from side to side as if he understands every word you're saying. I often times ask him, Yuukan how's your day going? And he'll cock his head from side to side!" Yuukan has his fans, as even the neighbors love to visit with him!

If you would like an easy going, non-demanding compaion who is happy to hang out and share his life with you, perhaps Yuukan is the Akita for you. He's a beautiful boy with a go-with-the-flow attitude.

For more information about him, please email us at:
info@tikihutakitarescue.com

For information about the adoption process and to download an application, please visit this page:  www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting.cfm

Yuukan is 6 years old and a large dog. Sadly, his family must find another home for him, due to medical reasons in the family. Yuukan would do best in a home without other dogs or cats, as he hasn't lived with either.

Here is what Yuukan's family says about him:
"Yuukan would be great in a home that enjoys having a dog around but doesn't need him by your feet all the time. He likes having people come pet him but not necessarily giving him constant attention. He loves short walks and being outside. He can handle an active home or a quiet one. Yuukan needs someone with patience because he sneezes and coughs and at 2 years old had a knee replacement. He loves to lay around in the house and just observe."

Yuukan is available for adoption through a private party; however, TikiHut is assisting them in the application and screening process. Yuukan's family will require a $75.00 adoption fee.
